Access and Eligibility

MEDICINAL CANNABIS
FOR AUSTRALIAN PATIENTS

In Australia, medicinal cannabis is legal for patients with a valid prescription. It can be used alongside conventional medications or can be used as a natural alternative when your current medications aren’t providing relief or cause unwelcome side effects.

For Patients

Australian medicinal cannabis eligibility

Your doctor will be able to advise you on whether medicinal cannabis is an appropriate treatment for your condition. To be eligible for a medicinal cannabis prescription in Australia, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) states that a patient must:

01

Have a chronic medical condition (with symptoms lasting three months or more) that has been diagnosed by a medical professional.

02

and/or have sought out other forms of treatment that either failed to provide relief in treating the condition or resulted in adverse side effects.

Disclaimer: There may be other factors that your doctor will consider when assessing whether medicinal cannabis is a good treatment for you, based on your condition/s and individual circumstances. Visit the TGA website for further up-to-date information about medicinal cannabis treatments.
