Prescribing Medicinal Cannabis in Australia
Applying for medical cannabis for Australian patients is now simpler than ever thanks to streamlined SAS pathways.
Because the majority of medicinal cannabis products in Australia are not TGA-approved, doctors are required to apply to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) using the Special Access Scheme (SAS) pathways on behalf of their patients.
There are two commonly utilised SAS pathways:
SAC Category B
SAS Category B is a pathway enabling healthcare professionals to request access to unapproved therapeutic goods, including medicinal cannabis, for individual patients. This is pursued when conventional treatments are unsuitable, and TGA approval is pending.
Authorised Prescriber
An Authorised Prescriber is a healthcare professional authorised by the TGA to prescribe specific unapproved therapeutic goods, such as medicinal cannabis, to a designated class of patients without individual applications. This expedites the access process for both healthcare professionals and patients.
Just like strains can be one-of-a-kind, legalities around medicinal cannabis can be unique too. Being familiar with the regional differences in medical cannabis laws is essential for a smooth prescribing experience. Before starting the application process, doctors should also familiarise themselves with the therapeutic applications of medicinal cannabis, including dosing and monitoring practices.
