dispensing Medicinal Cannabis in Australia
Pharmacists all across Australia are building strong foundations for medicinal cannabis access across Australia, ensuring patients can safely receive the best cannabinoid therapies for their health.
To dispense medicinal cannabis in Australia, two key requirements exist:
TGA approval
Pharmacies typically need a TGA approval letter, often the SAS B approval, for unregistered medicinal cannabis products. The TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) regulates all therapeutic goods in Australia, including medicines. Unregistered medicinal cannabis products haven't gone through the full registration process for the ARTG (Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods). A SAS B approval allows pharmacists to dispense these products based on a doctor's prescription.
Valid Prescription
A valid prescription from a doctor or authorised prescriber is mandatory for dispensing medicinal cannabis. While doctors are the most common prescribers, some other healthcare professionals may be authorised to prescribe medicinal cannabis in certain situations. This prescription will specify the type, dosage, and duration of the medicinal cannabis treatment for the patient.
Just as dispensing medicinal cannabis presents new opportunities for pharmacists, it can also involve navigating specific regulations. We’re dedicated to helping pharmacy partners through every step. Our experienced support team is here to assist, answer your questions and guide you through the diverse state regulations for compliance in Australia.
